A very attractive 1866 with rays, shield nickel graded EF 40 by ANACS. It carries an above average strike with some minor die cracks throughout the obverse It holds an attractive original patina among both sides.
This date is very popular among Type Collectors as it is the first year of the shield nickel series. It holds a large mintage of 14,742,500. However, of this mintage the PCGS Coin Facts estimates that only 40,000 have survived in all grades today.
